Poetry

“Pathways” by Rainer Maria Rilke.

Understand, I’ll slip quietly
away from the noisy crowd
when I see the pale
stars rising, blooming, over the oaks.

I’ll pursue solitary pathways
through the pale twilit meadows,
with only this one dream:

You come too.

  1. Any chance you could say where this poem is from? Which collection? I can’t find it referenced in any of his so far.

    1. Allegedly it first appeared in Rilke’s “First Poems”, the first collection of poetry he released in his early 20’s, but in my years, I never could track down a copy, or any solid evidence of its existence. To my personal knowledge, it appeared first to me in his collection “Erste Gedichte” published in 1913. Hope that helps you out.
